Should the letter of Revelation have been understandable
to the recipients?

The
seven churches were to whom the book of Revelation was written. So they should
have been able to understand it. Revelation 1:1-3 indicates that this letter
was written as an unveiling or disclosing, which is the meaning of
“Revelation”, to those it was written. In Revelation 1:1, it is to “to show His servants—things which must
shortly take place”.
In
Revelation 1:3, it says “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words
of this prophecy, and keep those things
which are written in it.” So logically, they needed to understand it if
they were to keep it.
Read Revelation 5-10:10. (Yes, you are right, this seems like a lot to
read but remember, it is only a small part of a letter after all.)
