Significance Of The Resurrection: The Conquering King Conquering The Grave

Why is the resurrection so important? Why does it literally sit at the heart of Scripture with eternal matters hinging on it?

You need to understand that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ stand at the crossroads of the Christian faith. His crucifixion wasn’t a defeat, nor was His resurrection merely a remarkable miracle. Instead, they show the fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption as well as Christ's victory [over sin and death].

This is why we can have 100% certainty of eternal life for those who belong to Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:3-4, 54-57). Christ, and Christ alone, holds the keys to eternal life and proved it by His resurrection showing His infinite power over sin and death itself!

Why Was Christ's Death Necessary?

From the earliest pages of Scripture, we know that death entered the world through Adam's sin (e.g., Genesis 2:17, 3:19; Romans 5:12). Because all have sinned (besides the fact that we all sinned in Adam), mankind stands guilty before a holy God (e.g., Romans 3:23; 6:23). Our sin deserves the full wrath and judgment of God. No sinful human being can be a perfect sacrifice sufficient to redeem mankind.

Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, became flesh to accomplish what fallen man could never do (John 1:14; Hebrews 4:15). As the final Passover Lamb, He willingly suffered and died, bearing the penalty for sin (Isaiah 53:5-6; 1 Peter 2:24).

His sacrifice satisfied God’s infinite justice and provided the only way of salvation (Hebrews 9:26-28; Acts 4:12) because of His full godly nature. In other words, being a fully man and sinless meant He was without blemish; being fully God meant He could endure the infinite punishment for all our sins and have the power to return from the dead victoriously. Thus, Christ's death wasn’t the end!

Why Was The Bodily Resurrection Necessary?

Jesus didn’t merely survive spiritually or live on through His disciples' memories. He physically rose from the dead! His tomb was empty, and His resurrected body was seen, touched, and recognized (Luke 24:39; John 20:27). He even ate food (e.g., fish, honeycomb, and bread) before His disciples (Luke 24:42-43; John 21:9-14).

The bodily resurrection proved that death couldn’t hold Him (Acts 2:24). It vindicated Jesus’ claims (Romans 4:25; 1 Corinthians 15:17). Without the resurrection, Christianity would be meaningless. Paul declared that if Christ hadn’t risen, our faith would be futile and we would remain in our sins (1 Corinthians 15:14-19). So, Christ’s resurrection is the “capstone” of the building of Christianity.

Christ's Power Over Life And Death Points To His Divine Nature

Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus utilized a unique authority over life and death because of who He is. He raised Jairus's daughter (Mark 5:41-42), the widow's son (Luke 7:14-15), and Lazarus (John 11:43-44).

However, His own resurrection revealed something far greater. Jesus declared,

“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” (John 10:17-18, NKJV).

Scripture attributes Christ's resurrection to the Father (Galatians 1:1), the Spirit (Romans 8:11), and Christ Himself (John 2:19-21). This harmonious testimony reflects the divine power of the one triune God (one God, three persons of the Godhead).

Christ isn’t merely a prophet through whom God worked miracles. He is God incarnate, possessing divine authority over life and death (John 1:1-3, 14; Colossians 2:9). Bear in mind that isn’t too hard for an all-powerful God to do.

Christ Calls Himself "The Resurrection"

Before raising Lazarus, Jesus proclaimed,

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. “And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” (John 11:25-27, NKJV).

This declaration is extraordinary if you think about it! Jesus didn’t simply claim to teach about resurrection or possess the ability to resurrect others. He identified Himself as the resurrection and the life (see also John 14:6)!

All life ultimately comes from Him (John 1:3-4; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1) since He is the uncreated Creator. Jesus continued by promising that those who believe in Him will live even though they die (John 11:25-26). We too will be resurrected. Eternal life is found in Christ alone (e.g., John 14:6; 1 John 5:11-12).

How Does Christ's Resurrection Give Us Confidence In Our Resurrection?

Christ's resurrection is the guarantee of the future bodily resurrection of believers. Paul equates Jesus as the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep/died. Consider the entire context:

But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. (1 Corinthians 15:20-23, NKJV).

Just as the firstfruits mean that there is a coming harvest, Christ's resurrection assures us as believers that our resurrection will follow.

At the general resurrection, the dead will be raised (e.g., John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15). Those belonging to Christ will receive glorified, imperishable bodies, no longer subject to corruption, suffering, or death (e.g., 1 Corinthians 15:42-54; Philippians 3:20-21). The Bible also teaches a resurrection of the unjust unto judgment (e.g., Daniel 12:2; Matthew 25:46; John 5:29).

The same Savior who conquered His own grave has promised to raise His people! Have you received Christ as Lord and believe in His death and resurrection? This is indeed a matter of eternal consequences.

Conclusion: Significance of the Resurrection

The resurrection is God's triumphant and victorious declaration that Jesus Christ has conquered sin, death, and the grave. Our salvation rests upon a living Savior, not a dead religious leader.

Christ currently sits on the throne of God with His resurrected body ruling over both heaven and earth. There is no place on earth that isn’t governed by Jesus Christ (even Mecca, Beijing, Salt Lake City, Washington DC, Jerusalem, etc.). He upholds all things into existence and no one can escape His coming judgment.

Christ's victory assures us, as believers, that death isn’t the end. Because He lives, those who belong to Him shall live also (John 14:19). The conquering King conquered the grave, and one day even death itself will be destroyed as it will give up its dead unto judgement (e.g., 1 Corinthians 15:26; Revelation 20:14). What a glorious hope for those who trust in Jesus Christ!
