What About Distant Starlight Models?

What About Distant Starlight Models?

Distant starlight is seen as one of the biggest difficulties to trusting God’s Word about a young universe and earth. When adding up genealogies back to Creation Week, there are about 4,000 years from Christ to Adam.[1] With six normal-length days in Creation Week, there is no room for the idea of billions of years (Exodus 20:11)!

In The New Answers Book 1, astrophysicist Dr. Jason Lisle tackled the subject of distant starlight by looking at the various assumptions behind the issue.[2] This complementary chapter discusses the various models that have been proposed for distant starlight by creationists in an effort to show how this alleged problem can be overcome.

But we would like to give some background to make sure that readers understand the issues at stake.

Why Is Distant Starlight A Problem In The First Place?

Usually, the way this issue is couched to Bible-believing Christian is this:

“So how do you get starlight billions of light years away to earth in only about 6,000 years?”

Most Christians are at a loss as to how to answer this question. Some try to say that the distances are not that accurate. But we would disagree. The distances really are that far.[3]  That should give you an inkling of the mind of God!

There are ways to measure the distances such as parallax and the Hubble relation. We will not belabor these points, as they are already discussed in a chapter in this volume.

But the issue is even more difficult than many may think. We are not just trying to get light billions of light years away to earth in only 6,000 years, but we are trying to get light to earth in only two days. Why? The stars were created on Day 4, and Adam was created on Day 6. Starlight needs to arrive for Adam to be able to use the stars to mark the passage of time, which is one of the purposes of stars listed in Genesis 1:14.

The Secularists Have The Same Sort Of Problem

The opposition rarely realizes that they have a starlight problem too. In the big bang model, there is the “Horizon Problem,” a variant of the light-travel time problem.[4] This is based on the exchange of starlight/electromagnetic radiation to make the universe a constant temperature.

In the supposed big bang, the light could not have been exchanged and the universe was expected to have many variations of temperature, but this was not the case when measured. Such problems cause many to struggle with the big bang model, and rightly so.

Inflation

How did secularists try to solve it? In laymen’s terms, they appealed to “inflation of the universe” in big bang models as an ad hoc explanation. In other words, very quickly after the big bang, the fabric of space in the universe supposedly expanded very quickly (faster than the speed of light), then instantly slowed to the rate we see today. But what caused all that?

They suggest that some field existed that caused inflation. There is no direct evidence of inflation; that is, there is no independent evidence. Inflation was invented to solve the horizon problem and another problem (the flatness problem, but that will not be addressed in this chapter).

Researchers recognize there are problems with inflation and the big bang. Some physicists and astronomers have been “jumping ship” from the big bang model in recent times, and this movement has continually gained steam since an open letter with respected signatories was published in the magazine New Scientist in 2004.[5] However, the majority of old universe believers still adhere to the big bang.

The hope of many who opposed the big bang was to revise the big bang and inflation to avoid the many problems. More recently, New Scientist ran an article called “Bang Goes the Theory.”[6] The article quotes two leading cosmologists, Drs. Paul Steinhardt and Max Tegmark:

"We thought that inflation predicted a smooth, flat universe . . . Instead, it predicts every possibility an infinite number of times. We’re back to square one."[7]

"Inflation has destroyed itself. It logically self-destructed."[8]

To boil it down, some researchers recognize there are problems with inflation and the big bang, and they are questioning aspects of these ideas, such as:

1. the big bang and its type

2. nothing to something

3. what started and a stopped inflation

4. the starlight problem and recognizing how bad it is

Inflation and the big bang have their problems, and honest scientists fully admit this.

Potential Models To Solve The Problem

Interestingly, biblical creationists have known about the distant starlight problem for a while and have been working on solutions. The popular ideas include:

1.      Light in transit (or mature creation)

2.      Speed of light decay   (cdk[9])

3.      Relativistic models

4.      Alternate Synchrony Conventions

5.      Dasha Solution

Let’s take a look at each of these in brief.

Light In Transit

Light in transit: This is the idea that God created the universe mature, or fully functioning.  The functions of the stars (Genesis 1: 14–17; Psalm 19:1–2) required that Adam see them right away, so God created starlight in transit when He created the stars. Many reject this particular model today.

The reason many do not accept the light in transit idea is because starlight contains a tremendous amount of detailed information about stars.  For instance, stars have been known to blow up into supernovas like SN 1987a. Had this merely been starlight in transit, then what we saw would not have represented a star or a supernova, but instead merely light arriving at our eye to appear as a star and then a supernova. In other words, the star that was observed before the supernova could not have come from the actual star. If the light in transit idea is correct, then the light was encoded on the way to Earth to make it look like an actual star. In that case, the supernova itself did not really happen but amounted to an illusion, sort of like a movie.

Many have suggested that if this were the case, then most stars are not stars. The implication is that God would be deceptively leading us to believe they were stars, when in fact they are illusions of stars. The idea of light in transit was widely popular among creationists for some time, but now many reject this idea because it seems far too deceptive.

Speed Of Light Decay (CDK)

Speed of light decay (spearheaded by Barry Setterfield): This is the idea that the speed of light was much faster in the past and has been slowing down primarily in a uniform fashion (but possibly in steps) to what we observe today.

Most creationists reject this idea now, but we encourage researchers to keep working on it. In the end though, it appears to have problems with other constants in the universe that are tied to it. If the speed of light were to change, then these constants would change too.  Those constants govern the structure of matter so that matter would drastically change as the speed of light changed.

Evidence for a reduced speed of light decay is also lacking and in centuries past, the accuracy of such measuring devises has been limited. Furthermore, as people really researched the speed of light over the past three centuries, it really was not changing as previously thought but has remained largely the same.[10]

In recent times, secularists such as John Moffat, Andreas Albrecht, and Joao Magueijo have appealed to the speed of light decay (VSL or Variable Speed of Light) as a possible solution to the secular starlight problem.[11] Perhaps as secular scientists do further research, they will see that there are some problems with this model. Either way, creation scientists are “light years” ahead of them in the research (pun intended).

Relativistic Models

White Hole Cosmology[12]

Dr. Russell Humphreys has a model dubbed the “White Hole” cosmology. A white hole is like a black hole, except that matter flies outward from a white hole whereas matter falls into a black hole. Near the boundary of a black hole or a white hole, space and time are distorted. According to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, this distortion can be described as stretching the fabric of space, and time progresses at different rates depending upon where you are.

So this theory plays off general relativity to solve the distant starlight problem with gravitational time dilation. From an overview perspective, Dr. Humphreys challenges the commonly held assumption that the universe has no boundary. Running a bounded cosmos through general relativity results in a model that is not at all like big bang and consistent with biblical creation.

Essentially, in the White Hole cosmology, all the matter in the universe flew out of this “white hole.” This would have occurred during Creation Week, and the white hole would have vanished some time during that week. As matter left the white hole, gravitational time dilation occurred. The earth was near the center of the white hole, so time on earth passed much more slowly than time near the boundary of the white hole.

Though there are still problems with this issue, such as blue shifts and red shifts not matching what they should be,[13] this model has some problems but also holds some promise, and so we encourage further work on this model.

The Two Hartnett Models (Relativity Model And Carmelian Physics Model)[14]

Physicist Dr. John Hartnett has two different models. One of those models utilizes relativity, similar but different from Dr. Humphreys.

Like the Humphreys model, the Hartnett model also relies on time dilation—a massive amount on earth. He postulates that most of this occurred on Day 4 of Creation Week resulting from space expansion as God was creating galaxies. So, time was running at different rates with six days passing on earth but more time passing elsewhere.

Much of this dilation of time would have occurred during creation week, as opposed to Humphrey’s model where it occurred all along at a steadier rate. Hartnett has produced some interesting results. Both the Humphreys and the Hartnett models are still being developed.

The other method is based on a solution utilizing Carmelian physics (named for Moshe Carmeli). In a different approach than four dimensions, this has assumed five dimensions (utilizing Carmeli’s approach). For details, I suggest researching Dr. Hartnett’s models from his original articles and books.

Alternate Synchrony Conventions

Lisle-Einstein Convention[15]

This model derives passages like Genesis 1:17 that states that the stars were to “give light on the earth.” For a God who created all things, having distant stars give light on earth is no problem. Astrophysicist Dr. Jason Lisle (also writing under the pen name of Robert Newton) led the research on this model.

From the concept of light being given from stars to light the earth, Dr. Lisle derived the Lisle-Einstein Synchrony Convention or otherwise known as the Anisotropic Synchrony Convention (ASC), which is based on an alternative convention that is position-based physics as opposed to velocity-based physics. Einstein left open both options but did most of his work on velocity based, and so have most physicists since him.

Einstein pointed out that time is not constant in the universe, so our simple equation [Distance = Speed x Time] is not so simple anymore. But this starlight model is based on something quite “simple.” Dr. Jason Lisle built on this position-based physics and the one direction speed of light (which cannot be known), and it solves distant starlight.

In laymen’s terms, think of it like this: You leave on a jet in New York at 1 PM and you land in L.A. at 1 PM. But you might say, “The flight took about 5 hours on the jet.” Here is the difference: according to Einstein, when you approach the speed of light, time goes to zero. So if you rode on top of a light beam from a star that was billions of light years away to Earth, it took no time for you to get here. So that 5-hour flight was a “no hour” flight for light. It was an instantaneous trip.

Based on this convention-based model, light left distant stars and arrived on Earth in no time. This fulfills God’s statement that these lights were to give light on the earth in Genesis 1:14. Of course, the physics is more complicated than this, but this analogy should give you an idea of how this model might work. However, it does not appear that we could perform an experiment to see if the ASC solution is true.

Dasha Solution

We would leave open miraculous options (as this was Creation Week). One particular form is by co-author Dr. Danny Faulkner (astronomer) dubbed the Dasha Solution[16]Dasha is the Hebrew word for “sprout” as found in Genesis 1:11. Many processes during Creation Week were done at rates uncommon today.

While some things were created ex nihilo (out of nothing) during Creation Week (Genesis 1:1), many things during that week probably were made of material created earlier in the week. For instance, the Day Three account tells us something about how God made plants (Genesis 1:11–12). The words used there suggest that the plants shot up out of the ground very quickly, sort of like a time-lapse movie. That is, there may have been normal growth accomplished abnormally quickly. The result was that plants bore fruit that the animals made 2–3 days later required for food. The plants had to mature rapidly in order to fulfill their function.

God made stars on Day Four, but to fulfill their functions the stars had to be visible by Day Six when Adam was on the scene. As the normal process of plant development may have been sped up on Day Three, the normal travel of starlight may have been sped up on Day Four. If so, this rapid thrusting of light toward earth could be likened to the stretching of the heavens already mentioned.

Some people may want to equate this stretching of starlight with some physical mechanism such as CDK or relativistic time effects, but this would not explain the abnormally fast development of plants on Day Three. This also overlooks the fact that much about the Creation Week was miraculous, hence untestable today. If one were to attempt to explain the light travel time problem in terms of a physical mechanism, one might as well look for a physical mechanism for the Virgin Birth or Resurrection.

Conclusions

When all is said and done, this alleged problem of distant starlight does not seem as problematic for the biblical creationist. Researchers have several options that can solve this problem, so it is not a problem for a young universe. Furthermore, we want to encourage researchers currently working on these projects. (Editor’s note: Since the writing of this, there have been other proposals and we want to encourage researchers to continue their efforts but will not be discussed here).

But from a big picture standpoint, no one outside of God completely understands all the aspects of light (or time for that matter). It acts as a particle and in other instances acts as a wave, but we simply cannot test both at the same time. This dual behavior is still an underlying mystery in science that is simply accepted in practice. The more light is studied, the more questions we have, rather than finding answers.

Such things are similar in the theological world with the deity of Christ (fully man and fully God). Even the Trinity is a unique yet accepted mystery (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; one God but three persons). And in science, there is the “triple point” of water, where at one temperature and pressure, water is solid, liquid, and gas at the same time.

Light is truly unique in its makeup and properties; and with further study perhaps we can be “enlightened” to understand this issue in more detail. Regarding the distant starlight issue, there are plenty of models that have some promising elements to solve this alleged problem, and we would leave open future models that have not been developed yet (and we would also leave open the miraculous).

But as we consider the light travel time problem, we frequently overlook the immensity of the creation itself. The sudden appearance of space, time, matter, and energy is a remarkable and truly miraculous event. This is something that we humans cannot comprehend at all. Compared to creation, the light travel time problem is not very big at all.

Did The Continents Split Apart In The Days Of Peleg?

Did The Continents Split Apart In The Days Of Peleg?

Bodie Hodge and Dr. Andrew A. Snelling

Biblical Authority Ministries June 4, 2025 (Donate)

In Genesis chapter 10, two-thirds of the way through the genealogical divisions of the post-Flood patriarchs, we read in verse 25 (all verses NKJV):

To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.

The same parenthetical phrase “for in his days the earth was divided” also appears in the repetition of this genealogical entry in 1 Chronicles 1:19.

Many find these genealogical lists very boring to read.  So, they skip over the details and often miss this parenthetical phrase.  However, there are some Christians who get excited about this phrase, and latch on to it, suggesting that maybe this is where the continental drift, which secular scientists have proposed, fits into the Bible!

It seems odd that this little “nugget” should appear in this genealogy of Noah’s three sons and their descendants after the Flood. But, does this phrase, “for in his days the earth was divided,” suggest that continents drifted apart in the days of Peleg as a result of God dividing and separating the continents?

Have The Continents Shifted?

In today’s secular society, people have been taught as fact that the continents were once joined together in a supercontinent that spilt apart and then the resultant continents drifted over millions of years into their present positions.  One primary piece of conclusive evidence usually presented to support this idea is the jigsaw puzzle fit of Europe and Africa matching closely with North and South America, respectively. If the North and South Atlantic Ocean basins are closed, these continents fit together at approximately the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a range of mountains on the ocean floor centrally located in the Atlantic Ocean basins (see Figure 1).

Figure 1 The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a strong indication for the concept of plate movements

It was this reconstruction that led to the idea of the earlier supercontinent called Pangea. The secular concept for this continental drift, now known as plate tectonics, goes further and suggests that there were earlier supercontinents, such as Pangea, Pannotia, and before that Rodinia, encompassing the earth’s proposed multi-billion-year geologic history.

Creation scientists and Flood geologists do not deny that these continents may have been connected to one another in the past as a single supercontinent in light of Genesis 1:9.  Actually, it was a Christian geologist named Antonio Snider in 1859 who was the first person to publicly comment on this jigsaw puzzle fit of all the continents, except that he believed the spreading apart and separation of the continents occurred catastrophically during the Genesis Flood.

Creation scientists believe, along with their secular colleagues, that there is good observational evidence that is consistent with an original supercontinent in the past that was split apart, and that today’s continents moved to their present positions on the earth’s surface.  However, the main difference is the timing!

Whereas our secular colleagues believe these processes were slow and gradual over millions of years, creation scientists insist it all took place totally by catastrophic means, involving continental sprint rather than continental drift.  However, many Christians who see the specific mention of the earth being divided in the days of Peleg, as quoted from Genesis 10:25, appeal to this particular time for the biblical explanation for continental shifting.

Were The Days Of Peleg When The Continental Division Took Place?

The context of Genesis 10

A careful search of the context of Genesis 10:25 clearly reveals that the referred to division of the earth regards dividing up the post-Flood people on the basis of languages and families, and moving them into different geographical locations.  In fact, all of Genesis chapter 10 is dedicated to dividing up Noah’s family into its three major divisions based on Noah’s three sons and their families, and then to further list the sub-family groups.

Because these genealogical lists encompassed all the people on the post-Flood earth, the division referred to in verse 25 must have affected the entire post-Flood human population.  Several other verses dotted throughout Genesis chapter 10 indicate that it was these people who were being split up by language and moved across the earth to different geographical locations or lands:

  1. “… separated into their land …” (Genesis 10:5)
  2. “… the families of the Canaanites were dispersed” (Genesis 10:18)
  3. “… according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations” (Genesis 10:20)

Even the culminating verse to the chapter states:

These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the Flood. (Genesis 10:32)

The chronological sequence of events on what happened at the Tower of Babel is given in Genesis chapter 11, where we are told in verse 8 that “the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth…”.  But it’s actually in Genesis chapter 10 where we are told about the different groups of people who were divided up into their families with different languages as a result of the Tower of Babel judgement.

It is appropriate to compare Scripture with Scripture in the context it is written.  There are four verses listed above in chapter 10 (verses 5, 18, 20 and 32) which explain the parenthetical statement (in verse 25) that “in his days the earth was divided”, as the division of family groupings according to the languages God gave them into different lands across the face of the earth.  Verse 25 was not referring to an actual physical division of the earth from one supercontinent into today’s many continents.

  • Another Flood!

Let’s stop and consider for a moment what would be the effect of the break-up of a supercontinent followed by the sprinting of the new continents into their present positions.  In late 2004, there was an earthquake in the eastern Indian Ocean, resulting in movements of up to 15 or more feet along faults.

The energy of the earthquake was transmitted through the water above, producing an enormous tsunami that devastated coastlines all around the Indian Ocean basin.  And even a few feet of movement on the San Andreas Fault in Southern California causes the ground to shake for many miles around and freeways and other structures to collapse.

If the continents did indeed split apart in the days of Peleg, moving thousands of miles into their current positions in a catastrophic manner, the resulting devastation would have utterly destroyed the face of the earth and everything living on it.  The ocean waters would have flooded over the continents in huge tsunamis, creating a second worldwide flood event!

In Genesis chapters 10 and 11, we see no written description of such an event.  To the contrary, at the end of the Flood in Noah’s day God made specific statements that He would never allow another worldwide Flood to ravage the earth’s surface and its inhabitants (Genesis 8:21-22; Genesis 9:11).  God specifically stated that He had set the boundaries around the land beyond which the waters would never again flood the earth (Psalm 104:8-9).

Of course, in order to shore up their belief that Genesis 10:25 is a reference to continental break-up during the days of Peleg, some may respond that God somehow miraculously held back the ocean waters to keep another flood from happening while this land division occurred.  However, there is absolutely no indication in Scripture, not even a hint, that this was the case.

Quite clearly, it is far better to err on the side of caution with regard to these Scriptures. This is particularly necessary when the context of Genesis chapter 10 has four other verses that confirm the meaning of verse 25 as referring to the division of people according to their languages into lands of their own across the face of the earth.

Furthermore, this is in keeping with God’s command to Noah and his family after the Flood to be fruitful and multiply, and to fill the earth (Genesis 9:1).

  • A Major Geographical Problem

There is also a major geographical flaw with the claim that the continents split apart in the days of Peleg.  The description of the Flood of Noah’s day in Genesis chapter 8 says that on day 150 of that global, year-long event the Ark ran aground in the mountains of Ararat.  We read in verses 3-4:

And the waters receded continually from the earth.  At the end of 150 days the waters decreased.  Then the Ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.

Why is this so significant? The mountains of Ararat should not be confused with the post-Flood volcano in Turkey called Mt. Ararat. As far as we can tell, the biblical reference to “the mountains of Ararat” speaks of mountains located in the region of eastern Turkey and eastwards towards the Caspian Sea.

The buckling of the rock layers within these mountains indicate that they were formed by continental collisions. Thus, if a supercontinent such as Pangea broke apart in the days of Peleg to arrive at their present positions, then these mountains of Ararat would only have formed in the days of Peleg. Therefore, they would not have existed on day 150 of the Flood for the Ark to run aground on them!

The mountains of Ararat appear to have been caused by the collision of the Eurasian Plate with the Arabian and African Plates, perhaps influenced by the concurrent collision of the Indian Plate with the Eurasian Plate (see Figure 2). So, it would seem that most of the continental shifting between Europe, Asia, Africa, Arabia and India most likely would have largely been completed by day 150 of the Genesis Flood.

Figure 2 Mountains of Ararat by plate movement directions

Naturally, there could have still been comparatively minor adjustments after this point in the Flood, as the mountains of Ararat could still have been rising as further mountain building occurred after the Ark ran aground. Again, there appear to be no hints in the biblical narrative of the Flood in Genesis 6-9 that there was any major continental shifting across the earth’s surface after day 150, at least in the region of the mountains of Ararat.

It’s possible however, that there could have still been some minor continental movement on the other side of the globe, with respect to North and South America, Australia, Antarctica, etc., and so this can’t be ruled out entirely. However, according to Genesis 8:2, the fountains or springs of the great deep were stopped, and the windows of heaven were closed, on day 150, implying that the Flood waters possibly had reached their zenith at that point.

Furthermore, if the springs were associated with the rifting of the earth’s crust and the sea-floor spreading, subduction and mantle convection that had moved the continental plates apart catastrophically, then the closure of these springs or fountains would seem to imply that the processes allowing for major movement of the continents would have stopped at this point, or at the very least, began to start decelerating, and eventually reach their present snail’s pace.

All the primary geologic processes responsible for forcing the catastrophic continental movements during the Flood appear to have likewise, begun to rapidly decelerate on and after day 150. This is a significant shift during the Flood.

Genesis 8:3 indicates that the Flood waters began to steadily decrease and therefore recede from this time point onwards, which would seem to indicate that the Flood waters were now subject to new land surfaces and topography rising and valleys sinking as a result of vertical earth movements. This is in stark contrast to the large horizontal movement and associated mountain-building that shifted the continents apart in the first portion of the Flood year.

Further Scientific Confirmations Of Continental Shift During The Flood

There are numerous evidences that confirm the contention that the pre-Flood supercontinent split and the resultant continents shifted apart catastrophically during the Flood. Several of these are highlighted below.

  • Folded Fossil-bearing sediment

The fossil-bearing sedimentary layers produced by the Flood include the massive amount of plants buried and fossilized in coal beds. Many of these coal beds in the eastern United States can be traced right across Europe as far as Russia, a testimony to their global-scale formation during the Flood.

There are also folded coal seams in the Appalachian Mountains and in the Ural Mountains of Russia. These deformed rock units formed by collisions of continents as a result of rapid continental movement. They were formed before other fossil-bearing sedimentary layers were deposited above the coal beds as a result of continued erosion elsewhere during the Flood.

In order to fold and later bury these coal deposits, the continental division and shifting responsible for these mountain-building collisions had to have occurred during the Flood.  This is also the same movement of continents that then subsequently separated what is now North and South America from Europe and Africa to form the Atlantic Ocean basin, all during the Flood.[1]

  • Basalts

In a number of places on today’s continents are found huge areas consisting of thick volcanic rock layers stacked on top of one another. Even secular geologists recognize these as catastrophic outpourings of huge volumes of lavas, so they call them flood basalts.[2] The two largest examples are the Siberian Traps, and the Deccan Traps of India.

A smaller example is the Columbia River Basalt of the US Pacific Northwest. Flood basalts are found on every continent, usually with fossil-bearing sedimentary layers beneath them, and further fossil-bearing sedimentary layers above them, indicating they are also the result of catastrophic volcanic eruptions during early phases of the Genesis Flood.

The logical way huge volumes of basalt lavas could be supplied for such catastrophic eruptions on such a grand scale was via huge mantle upwellings, called plumes. These plumes likely formed as a result of mantle-wide convection during catastrophic continental break-up and shifting. Since these flood basalts had to be produced during the Genesis Flood, then the rapid continental “sprint” and associated mantle processes had to also have occurred during the Flood.

  • Apes buried first

In the post-Flood sediments of Africa (including some volcanic layers), we find fossilized remains of apes, and, by and large, in sediment layers on top of them are found fossilized human remains and other evidences of human occupation. This fossil sequence on the African continent is thus trumpeted by evolutionists as evidence of apes and then humans having progressively “evolved” from a common ancestor.

However, in the biblical perspective, the apes started migrating from the Ararat area to Africa as soon as they left the Ark, arriving early in the post-Flood period.2 Noah’s descendants stayed together at Babel and didn’t migrate into Africa until after the confusion of languages.

Thus, humans would have arrived in Africa long after the apes had arrived, and expectedly, we find apes buried and fossilized in the localized post-Flood sediment layers before humans.  This logical fossil explanation requires that Africa was in its present position before Babel and the days of Peleg as a result of continental division and shifting having occurred during the Flood when the apes were still initially on board the Ark[3].

Conclusion

Though continental division and shifting in the Days of Peleg appears feasible from a superficial reading of Genesis 10:25 in isolation, this concept has some major problems associated with it, such as:

1.               When Genesis 10:25 is read within the context of the whole Genesis chapter 10, the four other verses (5, 18, 20, and 32) speaking of the division clearly emphasise that this was a linguistic and family division of all post-Flood people into different lands (geographical locations).

2.               Had the division of continents occurred during the days of Peleg, then the associated catastrophism would have resulted in another worldwide Flood, in violation of God’s specific promise to Noah.

3.               Had the division of continents occurred during the days of Peleg, then the Ark (with Peleg’s ancestors) would have had no place to land, as the mountains of Ararat produced by continental collisions would not have yet existed.

4.               There is tremendous fossil and geologic evidence for continental division having occurred only during the Flood.

We, therefore, gently and lovingly encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ to refrain from claiming the division of continents occurred during the days of Peleg. The phrase “for in his days the earth was divided” in Genesis 10:25 needs to be kept and read within its context of Genesis chapter 10 to give it its correct meaning.  On the other hand, we also want to encourage people to realize that the Flood is the only major catastrophic event and the only logical mechanism for splitting apart the continents.

Answering A Few Objections[4]

1.  “To start with, the Hebrew word for "earth in Gen. 10:25, 10:32 and 11:1 is Hebrew #776 (erets) in the Strong Concordance, which says this word means earth, field, ground, land, and world….In fact, the clear meaning of this Hebrew word for "earth"… is a very strong indication that the Peleg reference has to do with actual breakup of the land mass.”

Answer: There are other uses of this word as Hebrew lexicons readily point out; in particular nations and inhabitants. For those not fluent in Hebrew, one needs to consult reputable Hebrew Lexicons such as Brown, Driver and Briggs (BDB) or Koehler and Baumgartner (KB) to see how each Hebrew word, in its context, should be used. Naturally, these do not hit every instance but representative instances (keep in mind erets is used well over 2,000 times in the Old Testament).

BDB uses as one of its representative examples that Genesis 11:1 is in reference to inhabitants of earth.[5]  However, the two brought up in Genesis 10 were not mentioned.

Though KB does not use any of the three pointed out, it does use 2 Chronicles 12:8, where erets is used for nations/kingdoms as well as several others to indicate countries and regions of people.[6]

So, to exclude this definition may not be wise. And considering that BDB used erets specifically in Genesis 11:1 to refer to people would be to confirm the point. According to leading Hebrew lexicons that utilize the context, these would be referring to the people being divided by language. Also, keep in mind that if one wants to argue for erets to mean “continent(s)”, this is not even listed as a definition among the lexicons.

2.  “You are incorrect that the Peleg reference comes in the middle of an account of the division of languages. It comes in the middle of a genealogy. The story of the division of languages comes afterwards, separately.”

Answer: Genesis 10 is a breakdown of the language divisions that are discussed in more detail, with the chronological account in Genesis 11. Even Genesis 10 points out after each genealogy of Japheth, Ham, and Shem that it was a linguistic division in accordance with their family group to their nations. Consider the phrases in Genesis 10 that summarize and signify the context of language in these verses:

Genesis 10:5 From these the coastland peoples of the Gentiles were separated into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.

Genesis 10:20 These were the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations.

Genesis 10:25 These were the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations.

The context of Genesis 10 is indeed referring to linguistic divisions from which the nations were being divided. Even a prominent Jewish historian understood this to mean a division of nations. Consider Josephus’s comments here:

“Heber begat Joctan and Phaleg: he was called Phaleg, because he was born at the dispersion of the nations to their several countries; for Phaleg, among the Hebrews, signifies division.”[7]

3.  “Have you carefully looked at the word for “divided” in each reference? They are two different Hebrew words: vs. 25 palag vs. 32, parad. The former, can mean to split or cleave and the latter, to scatter…. What is being divided appears different since the Hebrew verb is difference in both verses.”

Answer: The name of Peleg [Strong’s # 06389] in verse 25 is a variant of [06388] peleg which in turn is a derivation of [06385] palag. This same root word for Peleg’s name is also used in Genesis 10:25 is [06385] palag.  It makes sense why this was used in direct reference to Peleg’s name. But also, this is still different from verse 32 where [06504] parad is used.  However, they each appear in the same context.

  • Parad

Working backwards, the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament points out that parad is in reference to the scattering of peoples under comment 1806 (discussing parad).  They in turn reference Wieder, A., ‘Ugaritic- Hebrew Lexicographical Notes,’ JBL 84:160-64, esp. pp. 163-64.

In fact, parad is also the Hebrew word used in Genesis 10:5 where it states: “From these the coastland peoples of the Gentiles were separated [parad] into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.” Later Mosaic writings in Deuteronomy 32:8 also uses parad in reference to the split of nations.

  • Palag

This Hebrew word [palag] is only used 3 times in Scripture outside of Genesis 10. In 1 Chronicles 1:19, it repeats Genesis 10:25. In one case it refers to a splitting of a water channel when it overflows in poetic Job 38:25 and the other is a Psalm, specifically 55:9 where it refers to splitting of languages.  David was speaking of his enemies and was asking of the Lord to judge them with the splitting of their tongues. Obviously, David was conjuring thoughts of the Tower of Babel and tongue shifting there.

Peleg’s name was a direct derivation of palag and considering the context of Genesis 10, it makes sense this Hebrew name was indeed referring to the linguistic division. So there would be no reason to distance from this plain interpretation.

Can all sins be forgiven or not?

Can all sins be forgiven (Acts 13:39; Titus 2:14; 1 John 1:9) or not (Matthew 12:31; Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10)?

These passages, when carefully understood are not in contradiction but complimentary. Remember that a contradiction is A and Not A at the same time an in the same relationship. This alleged contradiction errs in that these are not in the same relationship.

Let’s look at the relevant passages (all NKJV):

Acts 13:39
and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Titus 2:14
who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Matthew 12:31
Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men.

Mark 3:29
but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation

Luke 12:10
And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

There is an important aspect of this alleged contradiction that needs to be discussed to clarify this “problem.” First, let’s focus on the last three verses above that discuss blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

When it comes to alleged Bible contradictions, always go back and see what the Bible really says in context. Image from Presentation Library.

The Unforgivable Sin

These passages reveal that there is one sin that is still unforgivable. If God repeats this three times in His Word, then it is important! Is this referring to using the Holy Spirit’s name in vain? No, though I wouldn’t recommend that either (Exodus 20:7)! What is “blaspheming against the Holy Spirit” then? Is it something more than words?

When one receives Christ, they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. If one doesn’t receive Christ, then they do not receive the Holy Spirit, which is blaspheming against the Holy Spirit. Denying Christ is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. This aligns perfectly with Jesus being the only way and the only name by which one can be saved (John 14:6; c.f. Acts 4:12).

The position of the unforgivable sin being rejection of Christ upon death is complimentary to the position that it was referring to the statements of the Pharisees challenging Jesus by claiming the Spirit’s work was that of Beelzebub’s. These are not mutually exclusive.

The greater context of Matthew 12:22-45 (also Mark 3:29 and Luke 12:10) [discussing spirit removal and their potential return], reveals that when Jesus cast out an evil spirit, the Pharisees accused Jesus of doing it by Beelzebub, of which they meant that it was “not by the Spirit of God”.  Take note that Jesus said this specific blasphemy would not be forgiven “in this age or the age to come” (vs. 32) but also later revealed they will “give an account on the day of judgment for their careless words” (vs. 36-37).

On the flipside, Acts 13:39, Titus 2:14, 1 John 1:9, etc. reveal that believers are justified from “all things”, from “every lawless deed”, cleansed from “all unrighteousness”, etc. Consider: 1 John 1:7: But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

The only way both of these sets of Scriptures can be true, is if people who utter such blasphemies (e.g., like the ones the Pharisees uttered) do not become believers. Thus, to the astute reader, Jesus basically revealed that the Pharisees in question would never become believers and would be judged.

This sin of blasphemy for both the Pharisees as well as other who do not repent and get saved cannot be forgiven unlike the other sins. If one dies without receiving Christ’s forgiveness, then they die without the Holy Spirit. Hence, they die without God and without salvation.

Often people want to blame God for this, but from a big picture, God is merely giving people what the righteous judgment they ask for as a punishment for their sins (going back to the first sin in the Garden of Eden). If they want life without God, God grants them their bidding in the same way the free gift of eternal life is given through Jesus Christ for those in Him.

But for those not saved, the punishment for the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit must be served and abides on them. And how long is this? Consider that God is infinite. The punishment from an infinite God is an infinite punishment. This is why we needed a perfect, infinite sacrifice to cover our sin and its repercussions.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Creator God (John 1; Colossians 1; Hebrews 1), who is infinite, could take that punishment. But if one rejects Christ and does not receive Him as their Savior, then they, whether they realize it or not, will still be punished for sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

Sadly, many do not realize that the punishment for even one sin is death (Genesis 2:17), which results in an eternal, infinite punishment. And Jesus said:

Matthew 25:46
And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

Now, with this in mind, let’s evaluate the other passages and see if this is really in contradiction.

The Subject

First, a question: Who is being spoken to in Acts 13:39; Titus 2:14; 1 John 1:9?

If one pays careful attention, the alleged discrepancy disappears. So, who is being spoken to? It is believers in Christ.

This is evidenced by the phrases “everyone who believes,” “us,” and “we” respectively. With “us” and “we,” Paul and John include themselves with their fellow believers.

Believers in Christ have been forgiven all sins and the punishment paid by Christ because of their repentance and belief that Christ has been saved. And, hence, they received the gift of the Holy Spirit and would not be in a position of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit.

Thus, these verses are not in contradiction, as the people being spoken of in Acts 13:39; Titus 2:14; 1 John 1:9 are those who have been forgiven and no longer capable of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. And those being spoken of in Matthew 12:31; Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10 are non-believers upon their deaths—when they no longer have the opportunity to receive Christ and receive forgiveness and to turn from their blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Thus, these verses are in regards to two different situations and therefore, they not in contradiction.

In laymen’s terms, these two sets of verses are speaking about two different sets of people: believers and non-believers. Believers are forgiven all sins, but non-believers will have to deal with at least one big sin—that has eternal consequences.

A special note to readers: please continually pray for those who have not received Christ.

Other Religious Writings

Other Religious Writings – Are They From God Too?

What about the Hadith, Josephus, Koran (Qur’an), Book of Mormon, Vedas and Upanishads, Apocrypha, Studies in the Scriptures, Book of Enoch, Protoevangelium of James…and the list continues? My answer sometimes seems too simple to grasp: No, they disagree with the Bible.

Let me explain this “presuppositional” concept. Being “presuppositional” means that we take on faith that God exists and that His Word, the Bible, is the truth. This is our foundation, starting point or “presupposition”.  We use the Bible, like a set of glasses, to look at all other worldviews and test them.

Image from Presentation Library

When we look at the Bible, God never tried to prove His existence or prove that His Word is superior. God simply opens with a statement of His existence and that His Word is flawless (Genesis 1:1, Proverbs 30:5). The Bible also says that Christ has all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, so God’s Word should be our starting point for all knowledge and wisdom (Colossians 2:2-3). As a point of note, God can only reveal Himself as the final authority that He is. He is that source authority for all knowledge, truth, wisdom and revelation.

In fact, if God would have tried to prove He existed or that His Word was flawless, then that created evidence, tool of logic or other means to try to prove such a thing would be greater than God and His Word. But God knows that nothing is greater than He and His Word and so logically, God is also presuppositional—that is that God takes Himself as the ultimate standard and stating point.

In a like manner God expects us to take on faith that He exists. Hebrew 11:6 says:

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.[1]

The next several verses mention “by faith Noah”, “by faith Abraham”, “by faith Sarah”, “by faith Isaac”, “by faith Jacob”, “by faith Joseph”, “by faith Moses” and so on. So faith is an important aspect. By faith, these people trusted God’s existence and what He said to them (His Word to them).

We shouldn’t neglect their example. By faith we trust God exists and that His Word is the truth just as these great people of faith. This faith, though, is not a blind faith as some suppose but a logical, defendable faith. True science confirms the Bible; the Bible’s history is accurate, and so on.

In taking the Bible as the Word of God on faith, books that disagree with the Bible are not the Word of God nor even close to equal with its status. This doesn’t mean these other books are useless as they can have other value, such as historical uses (e.g., Josephus), but they are not infallible and inerrant as God’s Word, the 66 books of the Bible, is.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16). If a book isn’t from God, then who is it from? It would be from man (even if is it influenced by satanic or demonic ways). So regardless if a book that is claimed to be from God or not, if it not the Bible, then it is not holy or of divine origin.

Some books attempt to add to the Word the God such as the Book of Mormon, some have even claimed the Qur’an is an addition to Scripture. When such claims are made, one should always be cautious. God warns about trying to add to His words in Proverbs 30:5-6 and Revelation 22:18.

When there is a claim of inspiration for a “holy book”, the book must be tested against the Bible (1 Thessalonians 5:21) because God will never disagree with Himself because God cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18) nor can He deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:23).

When Paul was preaching to the Bereans (Acts 17:11), he commended them for checking his words against the Scriptures that were already written. If someone claims that a book is of divine origin, then we need to be like the Bereans and check it and see if it is from God or from man. In other words, use previous revelation to test and check any alleged new revelation—if it contradicts, it is not new Scripture.

These other books such as the Qur’an[2], Book of Mormon[3], Vedas[4] and so on have disagreements with the Bible confirming they are not Scripture. For example, the Qur’an says God had no son in Sura (Chapter) 4:171 and Sura 23:91 whereas the Bible is clear Jesus is the son of God (Matthew 26:63-64).

The Book of Mormon says in Moroni 8:8 that children are not sinners whereas the Bible teaches that children are sinful, even from birth (Psalm 51:5). Few would dispute that the Vedas and other writings in Hinduism are starkly different from the Bible.

These other belief systems do have many adherents throughout the world. Of course, we knew that there would be false philosophies based on man’s ideas that would try to turn people from the Bible, Christ’s Word. It was predicted nearly 2000 years ago:

Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. (Colossians 2:8)

We need to be discerning when it comes to non-biblical writings and stand firm on the Bible and not be swayed (1 Corinthians 15:58, 2 Thessalonians 2:15). Also, it reveals the need to share the bad news in Genesis with them as well as the good news of the Gospel (Matthew 28:18-20). Many in false religions have false foundations and need the true foundation so that they can have a better understanding of the Gospel that is built on that foundation.

I want to encourage you, the reader, to consider the claims of the Bible, if you haven’t already. The Bible is the Word of God. So there are two options: place your faith in a perfect, all-knowing God who has always been there or trust in imperfect, fallible mankind and their philosophies. God will never be wrong so I want to encourage you to start with God’s Word and begin to build your faith begin to have a biblical worldview, instead of worldview based on man’s ideas.

It is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in man. (Psalm 118:8)
